SRI LANKA EMBASSY CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS WITH THE SRI LANKAN COMMUNITY IN THE GREATER WASHINGTON AREA

With the Embassy being engaged in celebrating Sri Lanka’s major religious festivals over the past three years, the celebration of Christmas was scheduled for December 16, 2007. However, due to inclement weather, the Embassy ultimately ended up celebrating Christmas with the Sri Lankan community in the Greater Washington area, on Sunday December 30, 2007.

As the chilly weather outside contrasted with the warmth and glow of festive decorations at the Embassy, the Sri Lankans in the Greater Washington area gathered at the Embassy to celebrate the spirit of the season. Ambassador Bernard Goonetilleke began the program with a welcome speech, explaining the importance of participating in multi-religious events as a celebration of harmony among diversity. He said the Embassy is a place where all religions are respected and people belonging to all denominations are welcome.

Dr. Gregory Fernandopulle conducted the Christmas Prayer. Following this, the spirit of seasonal joy pervaded the environment, as the gathering joined in singing Christmas carols. The religious program was followed by a reception with seasonal goodies laid out for the enjoyment of the guests.
