Ms Ru Freeman with Ambassador Jaliya Wickramasuriya
& Mrs Wickramasuriya
Jaliya Wickramasuriya, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador
to the United States, recently hosted a celebration of the new
book “A Disobedient Girl,” the novel by Sri Lankan-American
writer Ru Freeman.
The Nov. 6 reception, held at the Ambassador’s
residence, served as a prelude to the Smithsonian Institution’s
South Asia Literary and Theater Arts Festival, where Ru Freeman
was one of five Asian authors whose work was highlighted.
The Ambassador, joined by Dr. Franklin Odo, director
of the Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American Program, and
about 60 members of the Sir Lankan, Smithsonian and diplomatic
communities, lauded Ru Freeman’s book, which chronicles
the life of a young girl growing up in Sri Lanka. The Smithsonian’s
annual festival recognizes South Asian literary, film and theater
works.
