SRI LANKA EMBASSY AND THE SRI LANKAN COMMUNITY
IN GREATER WASHINGTON DC CELEBRATE RAMADAN

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC organized
an Iftar celebration on September 30, 2007, to commemorate the
Holy month of Ramadan, the most important month in the Islamic
calendar. Representatives of the Sri Lankan Muslim community and
Sri Lanka-related organizations in the Greater Washington area
gathered at the embassy premises to celebrate the event.
Speaking to the gathering, Ambassador Bernard
Goonetilleke said that events such as the Ifthar celebration help
us appreciate the diversity in Sri Lankan society and the unity
and strength found in diversity is something Sri Lanka can be
rightly proud of. Furthermore, the Embassy is seen as the catalyst
that unites the cultural, social and religious diversity among
Sri Lankans.
Thereafter, Mr. Naseer Azeez spoke to the gathering
on the significance of Ramadan. The breaking of fast was followed
by Maghrib Prayers led by Mr. Zuhurdeen and a reception.
Since 2005, the Embassy has taken on the hosting
of commemorative events for all major religions practiced by Sri
Lankans. This year too, Thai Pongal was celebrated in January
and a Sangika Dana was held at the Embassy to commemorate Wesak
Poya Day. A commemorative event will be held in December to celebrate
Christmas.
