FOREIGN MINISTER ATTENDS THE SECOND MEETING OF SAARC MINISTERS OF INTERIOR AND HOME AFFAIRS IN DELHI

The SAARC Interior and Home Ministers who are mandated to further strengthen regional cooperation in combating terrorism and eradicating drug trafficking and drug abuse are at present holding their Second session in Delhi from 25th –26th October. The Ministerial Meeting was preceded by the SAARC Conference on Cooperation in Police Matters and the Meeting of Secretaries of SAARC Interior and Home Ministries.

SRI LANKA SECURES RESOUNDING VICTORY AT UNESCO

Sri Lanka has retained its seat in the Executive Board of UNESCO for a further period of 4 years at the election held on Wednesday 24th October 2007 during the 34th Session of the General Conference. Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha MP will represent Sri Lanka at the Executive Board of UNESCO. Sri Lanka secured 130 votes placed 3rd after Malaysia and Philippines ahead of Republic of Korea, Mongolia and Pakistan. This victory underlines the continuous confidence placed by the international community on the foreign policy of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

MINISTER SAMARASINGHE BRIEFS EU ON HUMAN RIGHTS

A Delegation led by Hon. Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights met Mrs. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Commissioner for External Relations & European Neighbourhood Policy of the European Commission and several other high level Officials of European Commission and European Council in connection with queries about recent developments in Sri Lanka. The Delegation included H.E. K.J. Weerasinghe, Ambassador and Head of Mission of Sri Lanka to the European Communities, H.E. Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, Ambassador & Permanent Representative to Sri Lanka in Geneva and Dr. Rajiva Wijesinha, Secretary General of the Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP).

ICCT CONCLUDES RECOGNIZING GREATER COOPERATION AT BOTH THE BILATERAL AND MULTILATERAL LEVELS

The International Conference on Countering Terrorism concluded on Saturday (20/10) recognizing the increasing challenge posed to democratic states by terrorist groups, and the need for greater cooperation at both the bilateral and multilateral levels in facing upto this challenge. The Conference, attended by terrorism experts including academia and media from 23 countries, pledged to continue to function as a network in furthering the struggle against terrorism.

It was with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to address the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit. I am honoured to join the long line of distinguished persons who have been here before me. I note that among those who addressed the very first Summit and set the tone for it was Sri Lanka’s former Foreign Minister , the late Lakshman Kadirgamar a man of great talent , scholar of repute , diplomat without peer and a great humanitarian - yet another victim of a terrorist bullet. It is another form of the same bullet that took the life of Shri Rajiv Gandhi, at the height of his political career. These are stark reminders of the menace of terrorism confronting democracies like India and Sri Lanka.

EMBASSY INVITES FRIENDS OF SRI LANKA TO HELP DEVELOP THE EAST

The government of Sri Lanka has launched “Negenahira Navodaya,” an ambitious development program in the Eastern Province, scheduled to be completed in 180 days. Positive contributions to this initiative are expected from all Sri Lanka government Ministries and Departments. The contribution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka will be to provide relief services to the civilians in the east in the following identified areas:

  • Community Health Camps with the involvement of expatriates, foreign doctors and volunteers. Health services to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), schools and community centers could also be considered

  • English Language Teaching/Training programs by expatriate foreign volunteers. This program will be consistent with Presidential Secretary Mr. Lalith Weeratunga’s initiative to teach English in rural schools

  • Provide basic facilities like food, medicine, clothing, bicycles, to resettled families

  • Provide livelihood services to resettled families like fishing boats, nets, agricultural equipment, agricultural services such as drip irrigation systems, roofing sheets, computers, school books

The Embassy wishes to invite all friends of Sri Lanka to join in helping in this worthy effort to develop the country’s east and to bring stability to the lives of the resettled families.

PUBLIC DAY FOR EXPATRIATE SRI LANKAN COMMUNITY AT THE EMBASSY OF
SRI LANKA, WASHINGTON DC

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC is pleased to inform the members of the expatriate community that it will hold a Public Day every Thursday from 10.00 a.m to 1.00 p.m.

The Sri Lankan diaspora in the United States could meet the Head of Mission between 10.00 a.m to 1.00 p.m without prior appointment on this day.

The above arrangement is being launched as part of the implementation of policy set out in the Mahinda Chintana, to enhance ties with the expatriate Sri Lankan community to promote Sri Lanka’s interests overseas.

The Sri Lankan diaspora may discuss any matters in this context at these meetings.
