USAID/OFDA Response to Sri Lanka Floods
May 19, 2003
On May 17, 2003, heavy rains exacerbated by cyclones in the Bay of Bengal caused severe flooding and landslides in the provinces of Western, Southern, and Sabaragamuwa, Sri Lanka, particularly in the districts of Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle, and Matara. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the flooding and landslides have killed 200 people and displaced over 500,000 people. An additional 700 people are missing. These figures may increase as search and rescue operations continue. The risk of additional landslides is significant, as more rain is predicted.
On May 19, 2003, U.S. Ambassador E. Ashley Wills issued a disaster declaration due to the flooding. In response, USAID/OFDA is providing $50,000 through USAID/Sri Lanka to IFRC and the Sri Lanka Red Cross for the purchase of emergency items, which may include food, potable water, and temporary shelter materials. USAID/OFDA, in coordination with the USAID/OFDA regional advisors, will continue to monitor the situation and consult with USAID/Sri Lanka about possible additional needs.
