SRI LANKAN CREATES HISTORY IN THE US BY RUNNING FOR HIGH POLITICAL OFFICE

Daraka Sanjeewa Sedera, a U.S. citizen, is the first Sri Lankan to have launched a political campaign to run for high office in the US. He has, thus, created history in the US, through his political campaign to run for Nevada’s Assembly District 2 as a Democratic Party candidate in the November 2008 state-wide general election for the influential State Assembly in Nevada.

In the history of the democratic process, Sanjeewa Sedera has also become the first South Asian to contest for a major political office in Nevada.

Sanjeewa Sedera arrived in the US sixteen years ago, as a student at the Idaho University, and has resided in Las Vegas for over a decade. Apart from pursuing a successful career in real estate and in mortgage lending, he has been significantly involved in community service activities in Las Vegas.

The Asian community in the State of Nevada today is significant and comprises growing numbers of young Sri Lankans.
