Sighting of a light aircraft activates
defense mechanism
A warning of an aircraft sighting was dealt with
effectively by Sri Lankan authorities at the airport in Sri Lanka
late last night. The Sri Lankan air defense system was put to
test around 11.00 p.m. last night at the air force base in response
to citing of a moving object in the skies in the northwestern
area of Sri Lanka.
Three commercial aircrafts were diverted as a
precaution and were cleared for landing within two hours. According
to Chandima Rasputra, Chairman of the Airport Authority an airport
evacuation exercise was carried out successfully and normalcy
was established within minutes.
Sri Lanka tourism activated its crisis management
plan with the Deputy Minister of Tourism heading to the airport
and the Minister and Tourist Board staff establishing a communications
centre.
All airlines and tourism heads are advised that
the situation has returned back to normal and that there is no
cause for alarm.
