EMBASSY DISCUSSES LTTE’S TV AND RADIO TRANSMISSIONS THROUGH INTELSAT12 WITH INTELSAT LTD IN WASHINGTON DC

Officials of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Washington DC met with officials of INTELSAT Ltd on April 10, 2007, to discuss the issue of the LTTE transmitting its TV and radio broadcasts, viz. National Television of Tamil Eelam (NTTE) and Voice of Tigers (VOT), through Intelsat 12, a satellite owned by INTELSAT Ltd. These transmissions to South India and Europe have been taking place since mid-2006. Sri Lanka also took this issue up officially at the 31st Extraordinary Meeting of Parties of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO) held in Paris from 20-23 March 2007.

The matter is being pursued by the Embassy with INTELSAT Ltd, with a view to preventing the illegal use of satellite facilities by the LTTE.

Following the discussion on April 10, INTELSAT Ltd issued a press release.
